Crowns and Bridges in Liverpool – What, How and Why

We regularly use crowns and bridges at our Liverpool dental clinic to both repair and enhance a patient’s smile. A dental crown is commonly used to fit over a damaged, unattractive, or decayed tooth as a standalone treatment, to top a dental implant, or to replace an entire tooth as part of a dental bridge.

Liverpool dental crowns – all you need to know

Dental crowns completely cover a tooth from the gumline upwards. This is in contrast to a veneer which covers just the front surface and relies on the natural tooth structure for support. Consequently, should your tooth be missing much of its structure above the gum line, our Scott Street Dentist is likely to recommend restoring it with a dental crown.

Crowns strengthen and restore functionality to damaged teeth and when they’re crafted from porcelain they’re so lifelike that you’ll find it difficult to notice the difference. We can even design them to improve a tooth’s original appearance. There are several types of dental crowns including those with a metal interior for additional strength, known as PFM’s (porcelain fused with metal)
and all porcelain crowns crafted with zirconia, for a super strong dental crown.

What’s the dental crown procedure?

Dental crowns usually require a minimum of two visits. During the first visit, your tooth will be
prepared/shaped to receive the crown. This done, an impression is taken and sent to the lab where your custom crown will be designed, taking into consideration appearance and bite functionality. Don’t worry, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown until we call you back for your next appointment. The next visit will be to fit your new crown and cement it securely in place.

Liverpool dental bridges – A feat of engineering!

Missing teeth can also be replaced with dental crowns using bridgework. A dental bridge spans the gap left by a missing tooth or teeth and requires at least 3 crowns. Two of these crowns are placed over healthy teeth at either end of the gap (abutment teeth) and are used to support the third crown or pontic, as it’s called, which is placed between them. If more than one tooth is missing then more crowns will be necessary to bridge the gap.
