Did you know that it is possible to correct your smile using clear aligners? Many adults have been put off the idea of straightening their teeth because they don’t want to wear orthodontics but modern aligners have been developed to enable everything to have straighter teeth. Let’s have a look at how this tooth straightening device works.

What Are Clear Aligners And How Can They Help?

Clear aligners are made from medical grade transparent plastic, and they fit over the front of your teeth. While they aren’t exactly invisible most people won’t be able to tell that you are wearing them.

Clear aligners work best to correct mild issues and may be the straightening option for you if you have uneven gaps between your teeth, protruding teeth or teeth that are mildly crooked.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Essentially they work just the same as orthodontic braces, by shifting your teeth into the correct position gradually over time. The biggest difference is that they don’t make use of wires and brackets, and they don’t need to be adjusted by your dentist.

Instead, you will swop your set of clear aligners for a new box approximately every two weeks, which maps out a new position for your teeth to move into.

This way you won’t have to visit the dentist as often, and you really can spend your free time the way you want to while you’re having orthodontic treatment.

It’s important to remember that the treatment plan needs to be followed exactly as set out by your dental practitioner.

That means you’ll need to wear your clear aligners for 22 hours a day, in order for them to be effective.

How Long Will My Treatment Take?

The duration of your orthodontic treatment plan depends on the complexity of your correction. You will discuss this with your dentist, but most patients can expect around 12 to 18 months of treatment.

You must wear them for the full duration of your treatment plan. If you don’t you run the risk of your teeth shifting back.

Caring For Your Clear Aligners

In order to keep your aligners transparent and unnoticeable, they must be very clean. You will be able to remove them for eating and drinking; in fact, you can only really drink water while you are wearing them. If you do stain them, it can make your aligners stand out even more.

Every time you eat something you must clean your aligners and brush your teeth to ensure that you do not trap bacteria in your mouth.

You must also be sure to follow the cleaning instructions provided by your dentist. Each brand has a slightly different process to follow, but generally clear aligners need to be cleaned with a very soft-bristled toothbrush. Never use hot water on them, as they can cause the plastic to change shape.

What Are Clear Aligners Benefits?

Clear aligners offer the benefit of straightening your smile in a very discreet manner. They are ideal for responsible adults who will wear them for the prescribed time frame, and follow impeccable dental hygiene standards. We find that lots of patients have delayed or ignored orthodontic treatment in the past because they didn’t want to wear metal braces.

Clear aligners are more comfortable to wear too, and patients find them easy to adjust to.

Today’s orthodontics have improved drastically so that they no longer have to interfere in patients’ social and professional lives. If clear aligners aren’t the solution for you, your dentist will discuss other options like lingual and ceramic braces. There really is no reason not to consider teeth straightening, regardless of your age.
