Everyone wants beautiful straight teeth, but unfortunately, not everyone is born with an even smile. At Scott Street Dental, we offer teeth straightening options without brackets, wires and bands to help you achieve the smile of your dreams.
Clear aligners are a series of thin, clear BPA-free plastic trays that are created using 3D imaging technology to custom fit to your teeth. They are simple to use and maintain and do not require regular adjustments as do other options for straightening teeth. You simply switch your trays every 1-2 weeks or as recommended by your dentist. You also visit our practice for a consultation every 6-8 weeks so we can monitor your progress.
How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Unlike other teeth straightening options, clear aligners help you achieve a straighter smile without the need for uncomfortable wires and brackets. Clear aligners work by gradually moving your teeth into the correct position by using gentle pressure to make your teeth conform to the shape of the aligner trays.
After your dentist has examined your teeth, your mouth will be scanned, and the data entered into a software program that will plot the course of your teeth along the gum membrane. From this data, the plastic trays are created to facilitate the necessary movements your teeth need to make to reach their final position. You can also view your treatment plan and see how your smile will look once your treatment is complete.
The plastic aligner trays are then manufactured in an off-site lab and fitted to your mouth by your dentist at another consultation.
Benefits of Clear Aligners
One of the biggest reasons that many people choose clear aligners over other teeth straightening options is that they are almost invisible and more aesthetically pleasing than other orthodontic devices.
The aligner trays are constructed from thin clear plastic that is custom moulded to the shape of your mouth allowing them to sit flush against your teeth and appear less noticeable.
This can help patients feel more confident while wearing their orthodontic device, so they are often recommended for adult patients for minor to moderate corrective issues as they do not impact their work and social life as much as other teeth straightening options.
Another benefit to using clear aligners is that they are removable. Compared with other teeth straightening options such as metal or ceramic braces which require a modified diet and a specialised brushing and flossing technique, clear aligner trays only need to be worn between 20- 22 hours a day to be effective. This means that you can remove the trays for eating and easy oral hygiene.
Clear aligner trays are considered to be more comfortable than other options for teeth straightening. The metal brackets and wires of traditional braces can cause abrasions on the inside of the cheeks and lips. Clear aligners are designed to fit precisely to your teeth which reduces the likelihood of gum irritation. And as they are made from clear plastic, they won’t scratch or cut the inside of your mouth. Many patients also report that they feel less pressure on their teeth from clear aligners.
Compared with other teeth straightening options such as metal or ceramic braces which typically take 18-24 months to completely straighten your teeth, clear aligners can achieve the same result in 6- 12 months depending on the nature and severity of the condition you need treated.
